“Together we must seize the time. Together we must decide what we can make of our shared destinies.”

These words, spoken by the late Nelson Mandela, are the premise of Bridgetown Theatre Company’s new youth musical production, Youth nation.

Through this original piece, the company’s youth hope to inform, educate and bring about small meaningful change by using their singing, dancing and acting talents.

Written, directed and performed by the youth of the Bridgetown Theatre Company, Youth nation addresses current socio-economic issues that disadvantage young South Africans, in a humorous way.

These young actors want to show that they can “laugh at themselves”, while also paying tribute to their elders and acknowledging the achievements of today’s youth.

They bring their positive message across with a combination of different dance styles, “old school” songs, slam poetry and rap.

The production features Kim Fester, Marion Volkwyn, Jaydine Ross, Lucian Daniels, Yandiswa Jindela, Tanya Johnson, Kaylam Jacobs, Azraa Shabudin, Ashlyn Daniels, Kim Abrahams, Tristan Jackson, Caelina-Joy Charles, Zintle Mgwele, Wyden Adams, Nicole Ross, Emile Petersen, Alliyah Sauls, Clint van den Broeck, Amber Roodt, Gabrielle Arendse and Harun Maart who will be representing South Africa at the the Youth World Ballroom Championship in Italy in July.

Youth nation will be staged at Nyanga Junction mall on Saturday at noon, at the Stellenbosch Amphitheatre on Sunday at 14:00, at the Bridgetown sport field on Monday at noon and at Nantes Park in Athlone on Tuesday 16 June at 11:45. All performances are free. V
