Almost a decade after starting an exercise group, with one member, the Kommetjie Summer Squad is still going strong.

Co-founder Maggie Joubert says her partner approached her with the idea of starting an outdoor fitness group, which has since grown to be a regular session for locals to connect.

“Nearly 10 years ago my Summer Squad partner, Andrea, approached me with an idea to start an outdoor fitness group in Kommetjie. We started with one member. By the end of the summer, we had a handful and decided to go throughout the winter ... and as they say, the rest is history,” she says.

The exercise group, with charges a R400 membership fee for 10 classes, does cardio, toning, strength training, interval training, as well as core, abdominal, leg and arm exercises – in a social group with “lots of laughs and a great atmosphere,” says Joubert.

As well as keeping members healthy, the group has become a way to reconnect with nature and community, Joubert says.

“Kommetjie Summer Squad has made me fit, strong and toned. It keeps me motivated and energised. I appreciate our beautiful environment and I love getting a fantastic workout in a group which is inclusive and social. We don’t take ourselves too seriously and each person puts in what they feel they can realistically do. Exercise should be fun and a celebration of what the body can do and not a punishment,” she says.

“I know for many of the (mostly) women who come to class, Kommetjie Summer Squad has become part of their weekly routine. We connect with friends, get a workout and spend time outdoors, regardless of the weather. Summer Squad is a great way to relieve stress and improve overall fitness, health and wellbeing.” V Call Maggie Joubert on 072 425 5990.
