A Fish Hoek High School learner has developed a strong bond with horses to an extent that when she grows up she wants to be in a job industry that allows her to interact with horses daily.

Victoria Mc Callum (16), who is currently doing her Grade 10, has received many awards in the last couple of months including Western Cape colours in Horse Riding.

Victoria started riding a horse when she was two-years-old, following on her mother’s footsteps.

It was her love for horses that prompted her parents to buy her a horse, Strauss, at the age of three. Mc Callum has now been with Strauss for over a decade. She has another horse three-year-old On Winter Traces.

Just like her mother McCallum says she is really passionate about horse riding.

She trains at least six times a week. She is now recruiting On Winter Traces so that he can take part in horse competitions.

“He is learning. I want him to be ready for competitions. It takes time but I know he will be ready for it. I love horses and it is my passion,” she says.

Mc Callum has won a number of competitions. In December 2018 she was selected to ride for the Western Cape in the Equestrian Open Showing Team at the SA Youth Championships, therefore getting her WC colours in Equestrian Open Showing. She was also selected to represent WC Novice Equitation team at the SA Youth Championships.

In the Individuals at the SA Equestrian Youth Championships, Mc Callum achieved second in SA in the Novice Equitation, Champion Junior South African Junior Open Show Hunter, Reserve South African Junior Open Show Riding Champion, Reserve South African Junior Working Riding Champion.

In January at the Noordhoek Riding Club Awards, she received Western Cape colours for representing WC in Open Showing and Equitation to mention but a few.

Although she does horse riding for fun Mc Callum says it is amazing to be recognised.

“There is a lot of work that goes into preparing for competitions. I work hard and to get such results is really because of the hard work that I put in. I really enjoy this and have been doing it since I was two-years-old,” she says.

Despite her love for the horses Mc Callum also takes a lot of time to focus on her studies.

Her favourite subjects are science and biology.

She is also privileged to be able to do Equestrian Studies.

“I love this subject a lot. It teaches the biology of horses, how to feed the horses. When I have to work when I’m older I want to be a vet. I just want to do anything that involves horses because this is my passion,” she says.
