They say that life begins at 40. Comedian Riaad Moosa invites audiences to explore the truth behind this sentiment with him in his new one-man show Life Begins.

He’ll be presenting the show at the Golden Arrow Studio at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town from Friday 27 January until Saturday 25 February.

“Even though I am turning 40 this year, in many ways, I feel like I’m still crawling,” he says. “I’m looking back at my journey from being an aspirational doctor, coming from a relatively conservative Muslim background, where both my parents were doctors, and how I actually journeyed to becoming a stand-up comedian.”

Life Begins is a snapshot into the life of Riaad Moosa, looking at his roles as a father of three children, a husband, comedian and an actor – with all the current cultural and political issues surrounding him thrown in.

“The show is very philosophical and existential,” he says.

Life Begins is about normal issues that come with growing older, but also about Riaad’s newfound wisdom in “a world turned on its head” with references to Donald Trump, Brexit, South Africa’s state capture and the #FeesMustFall movement.

“It’s about how I negotiate all these things happening around me while trying to maintain a positive attitude.”

Through his comedic lens, Riaad hopes to give the issues of the day a “different spin” so he can enter the next 40 years of his life with vigour and excitement. V Tickets for the show, which is rated PG for strong language, cost R150 from Computicket.
