The Jolly Carp Supper Club in Retreat is on a mission to provide more than tasty treats at their Wednesday night events.

On Wednesday 5 October they will be hosting a theatre production to give diners an insight into the rich heritage of stories from the Cape.

Blaq Pearl, aka Janine van Rooy-Overmeyer, is part of the cast that will be performing Krotoa, a one hour play directed and produced by Mark Bowers.

She plays the lead role as Krotoa as she explains that this year we celebrate 350 years of the legacy of Krotoa.

“Mark Bowers productions promotes the Khoi Khoena nation by informing people locally about the rich legacy and history of our people that is sometimes hidden from the public,” she says.

“Krotoa was the ‘First Lady’ of Robben Island and as a young girl she worked for Jan Van Riebeeck and married a Doctor Van Meerhof. In this production we tell the story of her achievements as an interpreter and mediator. She was also phenomenal in negotiating stock exchange (livestock) making her a shrewd business woman.

“This production also reveals the impact she had on the next generation and generations to come.”

Petrina Roberts from The Jolly Carp adds that the supper club has become very popular in the community along with its Saturday morning organic market.

“The supper club has become very popular as a relaxed meeting and dining experience in recent months,” she says.
“But we’ve decided to enhance that experience by adding performances like this to give our local talents a chance to shine and create awareness about our forgotten histories and legacy.”
On28 September the supper club will be hosting poetry, music and story-telling from the cast of Etymotic Mondays. Tickets for this event is R75.

The Jolly Carp Supper Club takes place at 38 Sasmeer Road, Retreat, opening at 18:00. Tickets are R100 which includes a meal of Butter Chicken curry. A vegetarian curry is also available and there’s a welcome drink on arrival. Book by Whatsapp to Portia on 074 519 0603, call Sheena on 081 539 6858 or email menngos@mweb.co.za.
