A road by any other name ...

A local street is now officially on the map.

The previously unnamed road, which runs from Beach Road towards the sea to the lighthouse parking area, has been named Lighthouse Way.

The naming came after the City of Cape Town called for suggestions for names for previously unnamed roads, of which the Mouille Point street was one.

Brett Herron, Mayco member for transport and urban development, says the initial proposal was for the road to be called “Beacon Street”. However, following submissions from residents, Lighthouse Way was approved.

The City received half-a-dozen submissions over the naming.

“The Table Bay District Manager took the decision for the subject road to be called Lighthouse Way on Tuesday 26 June,” he says.

The City is currently working to name previously un-named roads as an “urgent requirement to rectify the omissions for effective emergency services provision, effective service delivery and is a requirement for electoral registration purposes”, explains Herron.

The proposal to name these unnamed streets will be taking place city-wide, he adds.
