Feeling overwhelmed? Simon’s Town now boasts a place to recharge, heal and renew your spirit. The Simon’s Town Methodist Church officially opened their Lighthouse Renewal Centre on Sunday. The centre is a space created for locals to retreat and find solace, explains the resident minister, Reverend Olivia le Roux.Le Roux relocated from the West Coast, where she had already realised that many of her parishioners, and the local community, were desperately in need of an escape from the stress and tension of their daily lives. This led to her dream of opening a church-based centre, which would offer healing and restoration. The Simon’s Town church had an unused building, which once was used to house local sailors, and so Le Roux and members of the congregation set about converting it into the renewal centre. Boasting sea views, the lighthouse theme was an obvious choice. The centre has already housed groups who have participated in an Alpha course, a confirmation camp for youth from Ocean View and a retreat. The 10 rooms can accommodate up to 23 people and there is also a family room and juice bar, which serves healthy beverages. The renovation took around eight months, Le Roux says.At the official opening on Sunday, the bishop of the Cape of Good Hope Diocese, Reverend Michel Handsrot, led the congregation in a special service, followed by an opening ceremony. The centre was dedicated to healing and renewal. The centre is not limited to the use of the Methodist church and is open for members of the community to use, in line with its purpose.
