When Valda Rooy, a Hanover Park resident, realised that dumping was worsening in her area, she decided to be creative and turn the bad into good.

Rooy says she became concerned about the safety of the children in the area after noticing the filth dumped on the corner opposite her house piling up.

For her, it became more than just pollution but a health issue. She felt she had to do something. “I asked Antonio Van Der Rheede, our ward councillor, if it was okay for me to start a garden to stop the dumping and she said it was fine,” Rooy says.

She did not have many ideas as to what she was going to plant in the garden, her primary intention was to discourage the people who pollute the land.

Rooy says her garden is going to do well as she has since thought of more ideas for it and is also impressed with residents who are no longer littering. “They do not dump anymore, maybe it is because I put a strong Bible message from Psalm 23. There is another lady who also has a small garden but people continue dumping,” she says.

She says she does not want to plant trees or make it bushy. That, she is convinced, will be a haven for criminals. They will hide in there and rob people, she thinks. She also thanks her neighbours who have been supportive. They brought some baby vegetables and seeds, which she has already planted, and says they are in the beginning stage but in no time, they will be blossoming.
