The Muizenberg Historical Conservation Society arranged a visit for their members to Groote Schuur Estate on Thursday 21 February.

The Society’s events manager Melodie Nolan arranged the visit.

The Society manages Rhodes Cottage, on Main Road, Muizenberg. The Cottage belonged to Cecil John Rhodes and this was where he spent modest holidays away from the Groote Schuur Estate. This was also where Rhodes died on 26 March 1902.

The mansion, designed by Herbert Baker in a neo-Cape Dutch style, as both residence and suitable entertainment venue, was left by Rhodes to the state as a residence for “Prime Ministers” of the Cape. It contains Rhodes’ unique book collection and priceless porcelain from the Far East and features fireplace hearths with unique Dutch tiles and a 5-tonne bath made from Paarl granite.

Such was the demand for places on the tour that the Society has decided to arrange a second visit for the overflow and other interested members in the future. V Cost is R50 and members should contact the Chairman, Chris Taylor, at 082 908 3456.
