Organiser of the annual Bokmakierie Youth Day, Walter Daniels says they are in the final stages of planning their unique, 10th celebration.

Daniels says the initiative started through a local church in 2009 and when the drive slowly “died” within the church, he carried it out in the community, working closely with local stakeholders.

He expects this year’s celebration to be big and unique.

It is a two-day event starting with a gospel show on Sunday 16 June where a group of local singers will be taking the stage to worship and entertain the patrons from 14:00. This will be followed by a sports day on Monday 17 June from 08:00.

Daniels says activities will be designed to accommodate everyone. The activities will include soccer, netball, art exhibitions and indigenous games.

There will also be a jumping castle, face painting and a performance by the Metro Police K9 dog unit at 14:00, with live entertainment throughout the day as well as stalls.

Daniels says the event has become a tradition in the community over the years and has received dedicated residents who help cover some of the costs and provide resources through donations.

He encourages residents to mark the date, take advantage of the outing and celebrate the youth day with neighbours.

“It is through initiatives like these that the residents can eventually break the stigmas associated with their community,” he says.

Daniels, who is permanently employed at one of the big banks, says he knows once a year he has to give back to the needy.“We need to take a stand and speak the language that our youth understand better,” he says.
