Unhygienic conditions at the Lansdowne station ablution facilities have commuters worried about their health.

Human excrement can be seen just outside the facilities and lines the building outside and commuters have asked for intervention saying their health is at risk if they are to use the facilities.

Lansdowne resident and commuter Shaun Dyssel says he is put off by the condition of the facilities.

“How is one supposed to use the toilet facilities when it looks like that? Sometimes there is a stench that hangs around the place which is even more off-putting,” he says.

Dyssel says he “would never” use the facilities due to its condition and the “lack of maintenance”.

“It kind of strips one of your dignity when that is the only toilet you can use at the station. Something definitely needs to be done to clean it up regularly,” he says.

Another commuter, Yolanda February, echoes that the facilities need a proper clean-up.

“However, commuters should be more considerate when using the facilities. It obviously doesn’t dirty itself. People need to take ownership of their spaces,” she says.

“It’s all good and well to complain about a space that is dirty, but people are careless and don’t clean up after themselves. Littering is a major factor as well. They should start by disposing of their dirt wisely and using the bins in the vicinity,” February says.

At the time of going to print, Metrorail spokesperson Riana Scott confirmed the enquiry was being dealt with but no response was received.
