Advanced security within precinct

The Groote Schuur Improvement District (GSCID) continues to tighten security within its precinct as it launches its surveillance centre on Thursday 20 September.

According to a statement, the GSCID Surveillance Centre will be one of the first independent centres providing security monitoring capabilities and services to the greater southern suburbs. The centre will also comprise a Licence Plate Recognition (LPR) security camera project.

The new system will be prioritised in hotspot areas in the GSCID precinct. It will be linked in with the current security services operational within the GSCID and will be manned and monitored on a 24-hour basis.

GSCID general manager, Nina Farrell, says: “This service will tie in with the already existing security infrastructure and operations to facilitate a holistic approach and will provide oversight of all security matters, especially where crime hotspots are of concern. The initial stages of the project will see only one surveillance officer manning the facility on a 24-hour shift basis. However, the GSCID has already made provision in its design for the installation of a second surveillance desk so that should the project reach the stage and growth as envisioned, a second surveillance officer will be employed.”

Farrell says with the LPR software, the centre can track and trace all criminal elements before they can enter the precinct.

“The envisioned future of this project is to eventually collate a number of cameras in a planned network design so as to provide an overall coverage of an eye in the sky.”
