Many little girls often dream of winning prominent beauty pageants but sadly, not many get to live that dream.

For one Cape Town woman however, that dream became a reality after she was crowned the 2019 Mrs Africa Lady of Brilliancy in Johannesburg in December, and will represent the continent in Taiwan later this year.

Never having been a model before, Aphiwe Maddy said that since winning the pageant, she has been armed with compassion because she knows what it feels like to go without.

She said seeing her mother opening her home to many different people, who would never be able to repay her, prepared her for the pageant.

“That is what opened my heart to help my community and help the needy. That is what the pageant is about, I was well-prepared for it,” Maddy said.

Preparing for the pageant, Maddy hosted a number of charity events to raise funds for different charity organisations.

The pageant is a celebration of women of substance and virtue, and women who are passionate about many aspects of life.

“Women who are involved in education, mentoring and charity work are just some of the ones who this pageant celebrates,” says Maddy.

She believed that she won the title because, as a finalist, she had prioritised education, mentorship and working with girls from Factreton among others.

Some of her post-pageant activities included giving motivational talks to young girls at schools, and she collected clothes and food for fire victims.

“I am currently getting ready for Mandela Day with community and youth development-based organisation, Langeveldt Foundation, where we will be revamping the WD Hendricks Primary School park in Factreton,” she said.

Maddy works as a professional officer in the property transaction management economic opportunities and asset management for the City of Cape Town.
