Agents confused over boundaries

It has come to my attention that certain estate agents are trying to make sure that the area from Klipper Road to Dean Street is called Newlands. They consider Newlands to be a more prestigious area so they can ask for higher prices.

The middle of Dean Street has always been the border between Rondebosch and Newlands. The people who have lived here for many years are not happy about this. Plus, why make us sound undesirable? Rondebosch is the oldest village in the Cape and has a long and proud history. It also contains UCT and the Government Estate.

Newlands on the other hand was named that as it was “new lands”.

I fail to see what is so prestigious about it as many people were removed from the area in the old days. In fact our beloved domestic worker, who was more like one of the family, lived in Governor’s Lane with her family.

Now they are charging millions for land where she lived and for which I doubt she got anything. So, if I was you, I would feel ashamed.

I think the council, or whoever, should clamp down on these agents and make sure that any plans presented are naming the suburb correctly. They should not be allowed to change our boundaries to suit themselves as they are also causing problems for the police and post office as, if you say you live in Newlands then all your registered mail goes to Claremont Post Office and the police will also direct you to Claremont Police Station.

The residents then shout at our poor postman and the police when the problem is themselves.

This whole country is in a big enough mess as it is so, why add to it? We need some law and order and some certainty in our lives. Not everything has to be about money.

Estate agents also use a website that contains inaccurate addresses and ages of houses.
