Southern suburbs police are investigating after a fatal shooting in Pinelands and two armed robberies in Rondebosch and Claremont.

In Pinelands, police are investigating a murder after two men were shot dead at Pinelands shopping centre on Wednesday.

The two were shot by unknown gunmen while sitting in their car at about 18:00. Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Andrè Traut says the motive for the killing is not known.

He says the two attackers fled the scene in a white Hyundai Tucson.

“The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated and the motive is yet to be determined,” Traut says.

Reports have it that one of the murdered men was a well-known gang member from Mitchell’s Plain.

In Rondebosch four robbers were caught red-handed on Wednesday during an armed robbery at the MTN store in the Riverside shopping centre, but two managed to escape with an undisclosed amount of money.

The two suspected robbers, aged 21 and 25, who were arrested face charges of business robbery.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Lyndon Sisam says the two robbers who fled are still at large.

Sisam says six robbers walked into the store and threatened the staff with firearms and tried to lock the staff members in a store room.

“One staff member activated the panic alarm. Rondebosch police responded immediately. Radio control was informed and backup from flying squad and the surrounding stations arrived and surrounded the mall.

“Suddenly out of desperation the robbers fired shots and started running but luckily no-one was injured. Due to great team work by police, four of the six robbers were found trying to hide. The other two robbers sped away in a silver VW Polo TSi with an undisclosed amount of cash,” he explains.

Sisam says police searched the premises and two 9mm firearms were found hidden.

It was the second armed robbery to take place in the southern suburbs last week. Claremont police spokesperson Sergeant Lindile Dubeni reports that Capitec Bank on the Main Road was also robbed at gun point on Monday.

He says the robbers gained access through the roof and torched the safe. They allegedly fled with an undisclosed amount of money. No arrests have been made.
