The Community Champions Elders Awards ceremony took place at Media24’s rooftop venue, Nasdak on Saturday 12 October.

The awards, now in its fourth year, recognises older citizens who, despite their social circumstances, are actively making a difference in their communities and the lives of others.

The age category 70 to 80 years was won by Minnie and Daniël Hoorn from Capricorn. Danny Brown from Elsies River was the runner-up and Lydia Nogaga from Masiphumelele placed third.

Margaret Voogt from Blomtuin won the 80+ category, with Peter Knight from Maitland in second place and Sarah Dantu from Belhar in third.

Danny Brown also secured the majority of the public vote to take home the People’s Choice Award.

The awards were presented by the People’s Post, TygerBurger and City Vision, in partnership with Spec-Savers.

Each elder took home various prizes sponsored by Spec-Savers, Shoprite, Parow Centre, People’s Post, TygerBurger and City Vision.
