More than 200 nominations from all over the Cape were received for older people making a true difference in their communities, in the People’s Post SpecSavers Community Champions Elders Awards.“The amount of nominations exceeded all expectations. It’s wonderful to see how many of the elderly are still doing exceptional work to make a difference and uplift their communities,” says People’s Post editor Cecilia Hume.Every single nomination had an astonishing story to tell, making the judging so much more difficult.“These are all such amazing people; they are all doing such great things,” said Patti Graham, SpecSavers ambassador during the first round of judging.Another judge, Michelle Linnert of People’s Post’s sister publication TygerBurger, was stunned by the “beautiful stories of selflessness”. “I got (physically) tired just reading of some of the activities of these community heroes,” says Linnert. In the end the judging panel, consisting of representatives of SpecSavers, the SA Care Forum, People’s Post and it’s sister publications TygerBurger and City Vision, selected the following finalists.. Vincent Carelse from Lotus River,. Alice Fischer from Manenberg,. Mary Honeybon from Noordhoek,. Georgina Mouwers from Colorado, Mitchell’s Plain,. James Poggenpoel from Lansdowne,. Roland Wagner from Lotus River, and. Aldra (Nan) Williams from Northpine. All seven finalists will be honoured at the awards event, a high-tea at Moyo Kirstenbosch on 1 October (International Older Persons Day).
