Full bellies, smiles and fun.

This is the aim of an initiative by a family doing charity in Portlands.

For the past five years, Abdoraof Ismail and his family have been hosting a family fun day with several government departments and the street committee of Block B.

This year, more than 900 plates of food were distributed, says Ismail.

The event hosted annually on the last Saturday of October was held at the Caledon Street park last week.

“The day coincides with the Muslim new year and is the day we perform our charity,” he explains.

This year, the event also focused on drugs and gangsterism. The day started with an anti-drug march through the streets of Block B, comprising of Tulbagh, Durban, Caledon and Montagu streets.

The event was successful, with officials like Albert Fritz, provincial minister for social development, Dan Plato, provincial minister for community safety, JP Smith, mayoral committee member for safety, and councillor Moses, representing the mayor’s office, attending.

Music and entertainment were facilitated by the Freeway Saints bikers’ club.

The event was opened in prayer by Sheik Ebrahim Gabriels and Pastor Abie Johanas.

Ismail says the day was bigger and better, with four 100F pots of food served.

Ismail says he and his family are grateful for the stakeholders, departments, officials and residents who contributed to the event.
