Safeline hosted its annual prayer service in honour of Child Protection Week on Thursday.

The service, held in conjunction with other child protection organisations in the Mitchell’s Plain area, took place at the Christ the Mediator Anglican Church in Portlands from 10:00.

Rochelle Philander, director of Safeline, says that child protection week is very important to the organisation.

“This is the week when we look at the protection of our children and acknowledge their rights. I am humbled to welcome you all here. The significance of us being here is that our main role in the community is to counsel children as young as two years old who have been sexually assaulted. We have social workers who spend months and months with a child to journey with them through their trauma and try to bring about restoration. We also work with the community to empower people on how to keep our children safe,” says Philander.

All attendees wore green ribbons and participated in a candlelighting ceremony in memory and honour of children.

Reverend Dean Appels lead the service and says it was an honour for the church to be part of the initiative for another year.

Mizipah Educare also participated and sang the National Anthem before reciting Psalm 23.
