Four suspects were arrested yesterday (Wednesday 28 June) after being caught red handed during an armed robbery at the MTN store in the Riverside shopping centre in Rondebosch.

Four suspects between the ages of 21 and 25, are due to appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court today facing charges of business robbery.

Two other suspects managed to escape with an undisclosed amount of money.

Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Lyndon Sisam says the two suspects are still at large and police are investigating.

Sisam says six suspects walked into the store and threatened the staff with firearms and tried to lock them in a store room.

According to Sisam one staff member activated the panic alarm. Rondebosch police were informed about the robbery and responded immediately backed-up by the Flying Squad and members from the surrounding stations who all surrounded the mall. Suddenly the suspects fired shots from the roof and started running, but luckily no one was injured.

"Due to great teamwork by police, four of the six suspects were found trying to hide.  The other two suspects sped away in silver VW Polo with an undisclosed amount of cash,” he explains.

Sisam says police searched the premises and two 9mm firearms were found hidden on the roof.

  • This was a second armed robbery this week to take place in the southern suburbs. Claremont police spokesperson, Sergeant Lindile Dubeni reported that Capitec Bank on Main Road was also robbed at gun point on Monday (26 June). He says suspects gained access through the roof and torched the safe. They fled with an undisclosed amount of money and no arrest has yet been made. He says the investigation is underway.
