A’s secure 8-5 victory over Silvertree at home

Lloyd Stevens continued his return for Athlone Athletics with a gritty performance (5.2 Inn, 25 BF, 3 Runs, 3 Hits, 2 BB, 1 HBP) to help secure an 8-5 victory over Silvertree at Southfield on Saturday.

Although Silvertree out-hit Athlone 7-6, errors at crucial times hurt them the most to succumb to Athlone.

Athlone’s best hitter for the afternoon was Faizel Moosa (2-5, 2 home runs and 3 RBI).

Silvertree started with Dayton Williams (4.1 Inn, 21 BF, 1 H, 5 R, 4 BB, 1 HBP and 4 K) who was replaced by Keegan Watson (3.2 Inn, 16 BF, 5 H, 3 R, 1 K).

Watson (2-5, 1 2B and 2 RBI) and Anrich Robert (2-4 and 1 RBI) were Silvertree’s best hitters.

Stevens was relieved by Alistair Veale
(2 Inn, 12 BF, 3 H, 2 R, 2 BB and 1 HBP). Carl Michaels (1.1 Inn, 4 BF, 1 H and 4 K) took over from Veale to finish the game.

Silvertree’s bench was stretched as they were without Dean Jacobs (suspended), Josh Rich (suspended), Marvin Mahoney (not available) and Miguel Wilson (not available).

Athlone started the game with four players who represented SA baseball at a junior level in the last three years. Lee Marks (shortstop) and Dylan Daniels (first base) played against a touring Great Britain u.18 team in 2013.

Lance Gordon (catcher) toured Mexico with the u.15s last year and Mathew Diedericks (third base) toured Kenya last year and Japan earlier this year with the u.18 team.
