A’s stumble to rare defeat

2017-10-31 06:01

The super league of the Cape Town Softball Association took some dramatic turns over the double-header weekend.

Tantasport was stopped in their tracks by Falcons, losing 4-1.

This after Tantasport beat Westridge Yankees 5-3 on Saturday.

Falcons lost 4-2 to Glenthorn A’s on Saturday. The A’s in turn lost 4-2 to the Yankees on Sunday.

This leaves the battle for the league title wide open as four teams have lost one game each in the first four rounds.

Veteran Lindsay Vercueil’s excellent batting performance for Falcons (3-3) and the steady pitching of new recruit Amy Minnies saw Falcons put the brakes on unbeaten Tantasport. Vercueil was ably assisted in offence by Ammaarah Larney (2-3) and Bettina Phillips (1-2).

Minnies faced 19 batters, giving up only five hits.

Danielle Pienaar featured with the bat for Tantasport (2-2), followed by Nawaal Nacerodien (1-2) and Roxanne Albertyn (1-2).

The Yankees inflicted a rare defeat on current champions Glenthorn A’s, beating them 4-2 on Sunday.

Meagan Cable, on the pitching rubber for Yankees, kept the usually strong offensive A’s lineup at bay with her steady pitching. She faced 20 batters, giving up five hits and striking out seven.

The two runs by the A’s came from two circuit clouts by Lynn Lekay and Bronwyn Marshall.

Jacky Adonis was the pick of the Yankees batters (2-3).

Promoted Lavender Hill picked up their first point in a 5-5 draw against VOB on Saturday, while Kenfac Phillies kept their league title aspirations alive with a 5-1 victory over VOB on Sunday.

This week sees a slightly watered down schedule as three Cape Town players make their way to the South African senior women’s training camp in Gauteng.

The three are Lisa Erasmus (Glenthorn A’s), Nacerodien (Tantasport) and Nicole Alexander (Westridge Yankees). Grivonne Rhoda (Lavender Hill) will not be travelling due to ill health.

The SA team is preparing for the playoffs for the world championships to be held in Japan in August next year.
