Damon Plato (17) from Vanguard Estate scored himself a spot at the International Presentation of Performers (Ipop) to be held in Los Angeles in July.

He will be jetting off on Saturday 13 July to join many other upcoming artists at a five-day long bi-annual talent convention.

It acts as a platform for selected models, actors, singers and dancers from across the world to showcase their talent.

This comes after his excellent performance at the auditions held in Camps Bay on Saturday 6 April.

He started off with a stage modelling and was later given the challenge of performing a commercial piece.

“I went there prepared – modelling and singing are my things, but then I was given a script for a commercial and time to rehearse it over and over again, I had to believe in myself and give it my best.”

It did not take long after the auditions for Damon to get the good news.

“I could not believe it and it was a dream come true. I fell in love with the Ipop concept the moment I saw it and I knew I would not miss the auditions.”

Damon found out about Ipop on social media, got in touch with the organisers and pursued the lead until he was invited to the auditions at last.

Performing in front of a crowd was not a challenge for Damon as he is used to performing at church sermons, school and for his family.

As a Grade 12 learner at Groote Schuur High School in Rondebosch, he says the convention will complement his desire of becoming an established artist and prepare him for his graphic design studies which he wishes to pursue next year.

“I love art, I am a natural at it and I ought to use every opportunity I get to nourish it. I hope I will get accepted at varsity.”

His family is in the process of trying to raise funds for him and he says they are working on a plan to host a fundraising events.

His Mother, Bernice Plato will be going with him. She says the trip will cost them about R159 000.

“It’s a bit costly but we are so proud of him, we will be with him every step of the way,” Plato says.
