Not even the cold weather could stop Eden Safety and Security Residents’ Association (ESS) from making Eid-ul-Fitr special for the needy.

The association’s staff served meals to hundreds of homeless and disadvantaged people from various communities in the southern suburbs.

ESS reportedly served 400 litres of akhni and briyani and several loaves of bread along with cooldrinks.

ESS receives food items through donations from residents and local businesses and fundraising.

In addition to a warm cooked meal, the residents received party packets and some clothing items.

The packets included fruit and snacks for adults while children got sweets and snacks.

Shaida Lakay, ESS chairperson, says Eid is celebrated throughout the day and although they served the meal early on the day they wanted the beneficiaries to continue enjoying it within their comfort zone and still feel part of the celebration. “Eid is a special day for the Muslim community but so many are unable to enjoy the festivities we often take for granted.”

She says their gesture was a way of honouring Allah and they are glad it was successful.

“It was a very big success for us – the numbers grew enormously compared to previous ones. Everyone was very happy and we had enough for everyone. It would have not been possible if it were not for the donations we received. We are thankful to all who supported us.”V If you would like to help ESS keep filling empty tummies, call Abrahams on 078 220 7241.
