A school in Athlone is the beneficiary of a computer lab sponsored by local non-profit organisations, Awqaf South Africa and Africa Muslim Agency.

Al Azhar High School in Birdwood Street will now be able to enjoy a fully equipped computer lab.

School principal, Ashiek Manie, says he is thrilled about the launch, made possible by the sponsorship, and it is the school’s first computer lab.

“The opening of the lab is a milestone in the lives of the 500 learners of Al Azhar High School.

“It will take our learning to a higher and enriched level. We are so grateful to our sponsors for prioritising education and thereby securing the future of so many young people in our community,” says Manie.

Shaikh Riyad Fataar, the head of education at the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) which governs the school, said at the launch on Monday 14 May that he is absolutely delighted with the handover of the fully equipped computer lab.

“We offer a fully integrated education, Islamic and secular, and we are so happy to see that our learners will be given the additional skills to deal with the technologies of the modern world. This is just so important in producing a fully rounded individual. We have been blessed by this initiative,” he says.

Mickaeel Collier, Awqaf SA’s deputy CEO, says it is exciting that learners will now be able to study Computer Application Technology (CAT) and be “conversant with the digital universe”.

“It is so important that we equip our learners for the world they are going to enter after Grade 12. We feel this initiative will fully complement the life orientation and education the learners receive at Al Azhar.

“We are excited and grateful to our co-sponsors and are looking forward to seeing these young people empower themselves,” adds Collier.
