Vangate Mall in Athlone was the first mall which benefitted from a Covid-19 awareness campaign launched by Cape Town mayor, Dan Plato, at the end of last week.

He launched the campaign on Thursday 19 March to create awareness about the Covid-19 pandemic that is currently threatening the lives of people around the world. At the time of going to print South Africa had 402 confirmed cases.

As part of an awareness drive to encourage residents to practice good hygiene, the mayor engaged with shoppers and handed out Covid-19 awareness information and safety guidelines.

At the mall, he demonstrated the correct way to wash your hands and how to make your own face masks.“These activities are solely to focus on the prevention and healthy hygienic habits with which we all must become familiar with,” Plato says.

He also encouraged the public to practice social distancing (more than a metre between two people). He was accompanied by representatives from the City of Cape Town’s health department, as well as Grant Twigg, Mayco member for urban management, and local councillor for ward 44, Anthony Moses.

He thanked the staff at Vangate Mall for their co-operation, and collaborative efforts to fight the pandemic.
