Awareness drive in Strandfontein

2016-03-22 06:00

Strandfontein police recently conducted a drive focusing on education and awareness in Strandfontein by engaging with residents.

During February, the group, which was joined by dedicated volunteers, focused on raising awareness about home safety, personal safety and sexual violence.

“We took the initiative to go back to street level, engaging with residents who’s at home during the day, to be more alert in their immediate surroundings, assisting neighbours who are at work by keeping an eye on their property,” says Sandy Schuter, chairperson of the local community police forum.

“Many residents work during the day; meetings that are held at night are mainly about house break-ins that usually happens during the day, so educating residents by engaging with them on what to be alert for.”

The response to the awareness drive was positive.

“For the house break-ins at night, we encouraged residents to strengthen the street committees for street patrols at night.

“We held a vehicle checkpoint, where we also had a pamphlet drive, for motorists coming in and out of Strandfontein to raise awareness on property safety,” she says.

March plansDuring this month the group will focus on sexual assault awareness and education in San Remo, Bayview and the greater Strandfontein area.

“The volunteers have been wonderful in assisting us by engaging with mothers, daycare facilities, etc. on sexual assault.

“We still have a greater area to cover, but thus far we reached exactly 4000 people as per our pamphlet handouts,” she adds.

Police members also spoke with youth at risk who are faced with many challenges.

Schuter encouraged them to rise above their circumstances and be the best versions of themselves, using it as a stepping stone to a better life.

In their midst was a former gang member, who also asked to give a few words of encouragement.

Residents are urged to become part of their local safety structures.
