Muizenberg police have confirmed that a baby was found dumped in Vrygrond on Tuesday (9 May).

A picture of a dead baby circulated on social media sent tongues wagging but police say the picture cannot be verified.

Police spokesperson, Captain Stephen Knapp, says at about 12:15, police were called to an illegal dump site in Drury Road. He says residents led officers to the site where the body of a female baby could be seen.

He says the baby was fully formed and a post mortem will be conducted to establish the cause of death.

Knapp confirms that police are investigating a concealment of birth case.
