The badly decomposed body of a baby was found at the Silverstream sewerage pump station in Manenberg on Monday morning.

The discovery was made while council workers were inspecting blocked pipes on the premises.

Captain Ian Bennet from Manenberg Police Station says police officials were called to the sewerage pump station at 09:30 on Monday.

“The workmen clearing the sewage storage tank made the discovery while pumping and clearing the tank. They alerted police to their discovery and police divers came to remove the body from the tank. The body will be sent for DNA testing and to determine whether the infant was alive at birth. The investigation will look into who knew about a pregnancy or was pregnant and cannot give an account of the birth of a child,” he says.

A case of concealment of birth has been opened for investigation.

V Anyone with information regarding the incident can contact Manenberg police on 021 699 9400.
