Thanks to a tip-off, a 26-year-old man was arrested in Drury Road, Vrygrond on Friday 1 September for keeping an arsenal of ammunition. Under the command of Warrant Officer Adrian Andries, Muizenberg police officers followed up on information about the possible storage of firearms and ammunition. They searched the premises and found a backpack containing a large amount of ammunition. Muizenberg police spokesperson Captain Stephen Knapp says the bag was located in a secret compartment in a bedroom cupboard. “The following ammunition was confiscated: 79 .22mm rounds, 149 .357mm rounds, 318 .9mm rounds, 14 12-bore shotgun rounds, 15 .45mm rounds, 15 .556mm rounds and six .303mm rounds. The man was arrested and charged for the illegal possession of ammunition,” he says. He appeared in the Muizenberg Magistrate’s Court on Monday 4 September. “The station commander of Muizenberg police, Colonel Ismail Daniels, was extremely pleased with the success and stated that the removal of illegal or prohibited ammunition and the arrest of people in possession thereof are vitally important in our ongoing efforts to eradicate gangsterism in our communities. He further appeals to the community to continue to provide information to their local police officers. All information is treated with the strictest confidence,” says Knapp.
