‘Be cautious of customers’, police warn

2018-07-17 06:00

Police are urging businesses in Athlone and surrounding communities to be cautious when dealing with customers. The warning comes after another business robbery in the area, which took place last Monday.

Police warn that certain individuals might seem as if they are walking into a store to purchase goods, but are sometimes either monitoring the staff presence or getting ready for a robbery.

This was the exact situation for employees at a store in Lawrence Road on the morning of Monday 9 July.

According to Sergeant Zita Norman from Athlone Police Station, a 41-year-old employee was busy with administrative work on the day when he was approached by another employee who brought him an unknown man, posing as a customer.

“The unknown man had a seat at the employee’s desk and told him to stay calm and to not press the panic button,” explains Norman.

“He showed the employee his firearm in his right hand and asked him for the cellphones and to open the safe, to which the employee responded that the keys were not with him, but with G4.

“The suspect then took all the cellphones, with the assistance of two other men who were also holding firearms.

They scratched in all the drawers, taking cash, a laptop and a flat-screen TV, before fleeing the scene.”

Norman says no shots were fired and no employees were injured during the robbery.

Video footage of the robbery was to be examined.

The estimated value of goods taken from the store amounts to R54 300.

No suspects have been arrested for the business robbery as yet.

V The public is urged to call Warrant Officer Francisco Ely on 021 697 9238 with any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects in this case.
