‘Be safe at malls’, police caution

2018-06-05 06:01

Steenberg police officers are concerned that many people are falling prey to robberies and theft at shopping centres and malls.

They have now issued safety tips that might help in securing your hard-earned cash and valuables.

Security tips for customers

. When shopping, do not leave your bag or valuables unattended.

. Ensure that you have control over your valuables at all times.

. Never place your bag on the counter and leave it unattended.

. Be aware of strangers who may try to distract you.

. Do not leave valuables such as cellphones, laptops, cameras, etc. in plain view in vehicles when parking or driving.

. Ensure physically that your car is locked before leaving it. Criminals use remote control jamming devices to interfere with your car’s remote control so that it cannot lock your car’s doors.

. If you observe suspicious-looking persons or parcels, inform the mall/centre security or SAPS immediately.

. By reporting suspicious activities you can lower the risk of incidents.

. Always be alert to your surroundings.

Be alert when withdrawing money

. Always protect your ATM Pin and do not use your date of birth as your Pin number – it is easily obtained.

. Memorise your Pin number and do not write it down or share it with anyone.

. At the ATM do not let anyone stand close to you.

. Shield the keypad when entering your Pin. Remember your Pin is your personal key to secure banking.

. When paying by card for goods or services, never let your card out of your sight.
Your card could easily be cloned.
Make sure you receive your card back after a transaction.

. Report your lost or stolen card as well as any suspicious-looking persons loitering in close proximity to the ATM, as well as foreign objects on the ATM.

. Do not force your card into the slot as it might have been tampered with.

. It is recommended that you register for ‘Notify me’ SMS alerts at your personal bank in order to see all transactions going through.

. Do not withdraw large sums of money at an ATM or bank, rather do an EFT (electronic fund transfer).
