A concert in aid of local artist Neville D Hendricks will take place at Athlone Secondary School next month.

The 55-year-old father and grandfather from Athlone has been working in the entertainment industry for more than 30 years, but was forced to step down to look after his health, after suffering a sudden stroke earlier this year (“Local singer’s swansong”, People’s Post, 31 July).

With Hendricks leaving his music career behind, an income to support his family has also slowly diminished. Close friends of the artist have now gathered to put together a benefit concert to support him.

“Neville is well known across Athlone and has done different forms of entertainment in the community over the years. Many of his work was either free of charge or done for a small cost, in order to make a living,” explains John Mans, the event’s coordinator.

“We, as his friends, felt that we needed to do something to help him out because of his income being affected, due to the stroke. Neville is recovering and is currently doing well, but he can’t do what he did before. The funds raised from the concert will at least sustain and help him.

“We hope that the public will come in numbers on the day of the concert to support this elderly resident who has put all his energy into the community of Athlone. The entertainment industry was his life and passion, and we would like to give back to him.”

The concert will take place on Saturday 13 October at the Athlone High School hall in Calendula Road, from 17:30 and will include performances by a variety of artists. Snacks will be on sale at the event. Tickets cost R50 per person and can be purchased directly from John Mans or Neville D Hendricks. V Call John Mans on 067 297 3447 or 021 6379071.
