Better sewer pipes in place

2017-05-23 06:00

Following regular complaints by residents, a project to replace the sewerage infrastructure in Murdoch Valley has almost been completed.

Eddie Andrews, Mayco member (South), says there were enough frequent complaints over the past few years to warrant an investigation.

Residents complained of blockages almost weekly, explains subcouncil chairperson Felicity Purchase. These complaints have ceased now that the new pipes are being put in place, she says.

The investigation found the sewerage pipes were constructed from “pitch fiber” which has a limited lifespan and needed to be replaced, explains Andrews.

Around 1.2km of pipe will be replaced, to the tune of R1.3m, Andrews adds.

“[The replacement project will] extend the life of the sewer system and reduce the frequency of blockages,” he says.

Purchase adds that the rest of the pipes in the area have been investigated with cameras, and those made of pitch fiber in smaller size will be replaced with larger pipes.
