Better sight on street at night

2017-05-02 06:00

Da Gama Park streets will be shining brightly in the dark thanks to the installation of new streetlights.

The new streetlights form part of a city-wide project to update older lighting networks, says Eddie Andrews, Mayco member (South).

“The overhead network requires replacement as it has reached the end of its economic life. The network is currently being replaced with an underground system and new streetlighting will be installed due to the removal of the existing LV poles. These poles support both the overhead system as well as the streetlighting infrastructure. LED lighting will be installed as part of the upgraded infrastructure,” he says.

The estimated cost of the streetlighting is R450 000 and the project should be completed before the end of June.

“As a result of the new LED lighting, there will be improved road lighting and less spill or obtrusive lighting onto properties as the light is more controlled. The area will also seem more natural at night as the LED emits white light which offers a far better colour recognition than the existing yellow sodium lights that are currently installed,” he says.

“In time the entire city will benefit from the new LED streetlighting technology.”
