Beyond sharing 67 minutes

Are we as a society merely milking it for the sake of egoism or are we missing the point in not sharing experiences?

When we go out and perform a duty in the name of charity, we are often found “giving” either of ourselves or giving something.

Some of us actually receive something in return in the form of a lesson the act of giving can impart, but what is it we do with this lesson?

[ Mandela Day] will come, go and return again next year, but how often we do not allow that experience to influence the way we behave towards each other daily. A common theme among those who have extended a helping hand to those less fortunate has been along the lines of “we should do this every day, not just on Mandela Day”.

While we nod in agreement do we actually believe in those sentiments being echoed?

While I am not disputing that any form of giving helps every one in every way, we do not help ourselves by merely experiencing the self-realisation that comes with it.

It is through giving of ourselves that we embody the spirit of Ubuntu, and by that, it is through our experiences that we can provide that avenue for someone else to learn, grow and thrive.

Teaching a man to fish is one thing, but providing the fishing experience for them to learn from and the lake to fish in is another.
