Heideveld-based Arise Family Centre has bigger plans for the R100 000 financial boost received from MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet 21 years of Giving Back campaign.

The campaign recently gave away R2.1m to 21 causes. It invited supporters to nominate any South African charitable organisation or school that matters to them, even if they were not yet beneficiaries of the programme.

Arise non-governmental organisation (NGO) was one of the nominees.

The NGO provides a family centre model working in collaboration with other community organisations to deliver a quality, holistic service to families. It provides therapeutic and psychosocial groups, a unique family conference service that creates resilience within families.

It plans to use the money to fund its new pilot projects. These projects are a School Readiness Programme called Ready, Set, and Go. It helps equip children in Grade R, and their parents, with knowledge for social and emotional development for school, building resilience and self-awareness in their emotions and behaviour.

They also have a Thrive project which works with primary school children and the caregivers. It helps them cope with the complex traumas that they face in their home, school and community.

Arise director Danielle Moosajie says they also plan to roll out these programmes in other communities by training other professionals to understand the need to work with the entire family by building and strengthening family relationships through fun activities throughout the Western Cape and then hopefully nationally. “Family Strengthening Programmes are vital. We truly believe that if you strengthen families that you will strengthen communities,” says Moosajie.

She says this would help children reach their full potential at school and to be able to contribute positively to their communities and the greater society. They also ensure that the home environment is giving beneficiaries with safety, care, nurturing, sense of belonging and motivation to achieve big.
