Biggest danger is when your car is standing still

2017-02-21 06:01

Police are urging residents to be more vigilant when parking their cars, as cars have been stolen in the Mandalay area.

“Car owners need to be more alert when stopping and parking their cars in the roads. Sometimes the victim even leaves the engine running or the keys in the car while running inside a residence or business premises,” says Warrant Officer Wynita Kleinsmith, Lentegeur police spokesperson.

Residents are further urged to be cautious of what they leave in their cars to avoid falling prey to opportunists.

“Our advice to residents is that all valuable property must be removed from parked cars and we encourage drivers to ensure that they park in secure parking areas and behind locked gates at nights to avoid break-ins and theft,” says Kleinsmith.

According to her, most hijackings happen while cars are stationary.

Police are urging residents to be especially cautious:

. While your car is standing still alongside the road.

. While driving into or out of your driveway.

. While sitting in your car.

. While at a stop sign or traffic light.

. While loading passengers or goods.

. Always be aware of your surroundings and use your mirrors to ensure that you are not followed.

. If you suspect you might be followed drive to the nearest police station.

Tips to follow if you are hijacked:

. Listen and follow the instructions of the hijackers. Sudden movement could be interpreted as a threat.

. Do not panic or show emotional distress.

. Try to remember details of your attackers, such as names, physical details, visible markings, the car they are driving.

Colonel Herman Seals, commander of Lentegeur Police Station, says police will continue working around the clock to prevent and combat crime.
