Chariots of Fire bikers, their children and visiting riders congregated in prayer near Silvermine Reservoir, at the lookout point over the Southern suburbs, for their annual Jericho Ride.

The Jericho Ride is an event where Christian bikers gather at selected locations around the world to pray together and also to give thanks.

This year the event took place on Sunday 2 June at 11:00 and bikers gathered at a number of locations around the Western Cape including Franschhoek Pass, Tafelberg, Sir Lowry’s Pass, Rooi Else and Ou Kaapse Weg.

Shawn Small, president of the Chariots of Fire Biking Ministry, headed up the gathering at Ou Kaapse Weg which was attended by more than 30 bikers from areas including Grassy Park and Heathfield, and began with a ride from Ottery.

Steven Willems, public relations officer for the ministry, explained: “We want as many groups to pray at as many strategic places as possible.

“We try to pray at each of the key points – places that people recognise Cape Town for – because each of them is a gateway that allows people to come into the city.”

Small opened the prayer hour by thanking the attendees for their time and expressed the importance of gatherings of this nature.

“We pray over our city, over our communities, over our government – there’s such an outcry, there’s such a need in the city so we’re praying to unite the city and unite the country,” he said.

Since 2015 when Chariots of Fire first took part in the Jericho Ride they have managed to make an impact on the lives of many.

One such rider is Candice Fortuin, who explained that the ministry has been an important pillar in her life and that they are there to help others.

She said: “I think there is a stigma with biking, but with this being a ministry it’s very different. We have a love for God, we have a love for people, and that’s what we try to show because you can’t change any situation without love – and that’s what we’re trying to extend to people.”

For the hour of prayer, members of the ministry were given the opportunity to share their prayers with the rest of the group.

Pastor Trudy Moses spoke to the group about the importance and the power of positive thinking: “Every time you hear, read or see something on TV that’s negative, that’s being spoken over South Africa, just take a half a second to speak life.

“There is such power in what we say and we need to set the tone. Where you are, you can make a difference – each one of us here can make a difference.”

Chariots of Fire Biking Ministry has more events line-up on their calendar, with one of the projects in the pipeline being a concert planned for later this year.
