The Kensington Scholar Transport Association (Kenstra) donated blankets and two pots of soup to the less privileged in their community on Friday 26 July.

This came just in time as the city was experiencing extreme cold and wet weather conditions.

As an organisation working within the community, they identified the need and wanted to do something to remind the less fortunate that they are cared for. Kenstra provides scholar transport to children from various schools in Kensington and the neighbouring communities.

Beneficiaries were the dwellers of the 22 shacks at 14th Street and about 10 homeless people living at Nyman Street.

“These people literally live on the pavement outside a factory shop.

“As soon as the factory closes, they take refuge there every night. We want them to never give up hope, to believe that their situation will change for the better and that there is a group of people in the community who cares,” says Mariam Hendricks, Kenstra’s spokesperson.

“They were very grateful and happy for the gesture,” she adds.

Kenstra decided on donating to this area because they learnt of the severity of the situation from one of their drivers who is one of the dwellers.

Hendricks says they had a blanket drive which Kenstra members contributed to. They also received funding from parents of the learners they transport and support from their families and friends.

She also acknowledged roles played by a local business, AKJ consulting, ward councillor Helen Jacobs and a community activist Cheslyn Steenberg. Waiting for a photo
