Body found in home, 80-year-old arrested

2015-12-15 06:00

Police arrested an 80-year-old man from Hazendal on Friday on suspicion of murder.

Athlone police spokesperson Sergeant Zita Norman said the suspect called the police station to report an attempted break-in at his home in Oasis Road, during which he allegedly fired off two shots from his firearm at the trespasser, who was thought to have fled the scene.

Police then responded to the call, where they confiscated Petersen’s firearm.

However, later that day, police received another tip-off alleging that a dead body is being concealed at the same house. This prompted police to return to the address, where the suspect barred them from entering. Eventually, police gained access to the house again, whereupon they discovered the corpse of a 40-year-old man.

Norman said that during this time, 14 firearms were recovered comprising various makes and calibres of pistols, rifles and revolvers. The suspect was arrested and charged with murder and is being detained at Athlone police station’s cells until his court appearance.

Police later discovered a further 10 firearms, including a shotgun, pistols and ammunition in the house when Detective Constable Alvin Fortuin searched the property with the help of the police’s K9 unit.

Charges of murder, defeating the ends of justice, unlawful loss of firearm(s) as well as the illegal possession of arms and ammunition are to be levelled against the suspect at his first appearance in the Athlone Magistrates Court.
