Bothasig wins back-to-back baseball titles

2016-03-22 06:00

Bothasig thumped Silvertree 15-0 in their penultimate game of the season to secure their second BAWP Major League title in front of their home supporters.

Similarly to last season’s maiden championship, it is very difficult to single out individual performances. It was a collective effort that brought Bothasig the back-to-back league titles.

With one game to go, Bothasig boast 23 wins and four losses. Two of their losses came back-to-back in the early part of the season – to Bellville and Durbanville respectively.

They then went on a nine-game winning streak before they were surprised by Westridge Yankees in Mitchell’s Plain. Just as they got on a decent run again, Athlone A’s downed them 2-1 in their last defeat of the season.

Athlone A’s were also their last opponents yesterday and are in second place in the league. Athlone has a record of 21 wins and six losses.

Bothasig’s championship season was built around the excellent pitching by Dylan Unsworth and Jared Elario, which was supported superbly by Brad Erasmus and Lucas Steinlin from Germany.

This was backed up by a solid defensive unit which conceded the least runs in the league.

Although the offensive did not set the scene alight, the consistent hitting by Kyle Botha, Brett Willemburg, the Feldtman brothers, Andrew Norman and Benji Smith always posed a threat to the opposition. Newbies Tyrone Milne and Nick Eagles also stepped up when required.

Bothasig showed the depth in the club when they kept on winning while five of their players were away on national duty.

Bothasig’s squad was boosted by Steinlin, a more consistent Norman and the promotion of Milne and Eagles from the reserve side.

They also bolstered their coaching department when they brought in Greg Willemburg (VOB) and Shaun Marshall (Bellville) to assist Raymond Tew and Neil Adonis to prepare the team.

All players in the Bothasig side have been selected for either the WPA, WPB or WP u.23 squads for the national tournament at Chukker Road Sports Complex next week. Except for Duane Feldtman, who was not available for selection.
