Peninsula 77 Round Table, a local non-profit organisation, plans to brave the cold later this month to help the needy.

They plan to wear shorts and T-shirts during their collection of donations from 08:00 until the afternoon on Saturday 30 June.

Organiser Thomas du Plooy says: “We will be wearing shorts and T-shirts in order to feel the elements and garner sympathy for those who face the brunt of the cold daily during winter.”

They will be pledging with the public to donate non-perishable food, clothing and blankets. All collected donations will go to different Haven Night shelters, with Claremont Night Haven and Wynberg Night Haven being the main recipients.

Du Plooy says for them it is important to give back and help to uplift the “impoverished and those less fortunate, especially during the freezing cold and harsh winter months when blankets and warm clothes are greatly appreciated by the homeless”.

He says the idea behind distributing the items to the shelters is to support those who are making an effort to change their lives.

He urges the public to support their initiative and help reach an even greater number than last year.

In order to achieve their target, Du Plooy says they have tightened their relations with local businesses.

“We will also be bringing Toyota Claremont and Tokai on board even more so this year where they will collect donations for the cause as well.”

This is one of the organisation’s charity projects they conduct throughout the year. They are a group of men, all under the age of 40 years, and they invite interested men in this age category to join their meetings and be part of making a difference.
