Bridge construction to cost R2m

The next step in the construction of a bridge over the Vygieskraal River took place on Thursday.

People’s Post reported last year (“Plans afoot for bridge over river”, 26 September 2017) that plans to construct a bridge over the river between Statice Heights and Bridgetown had been tabled.

Construction of the bridge was initially planned to take place in the 2018/2019 financial year at an estimated cost of R2m. Director for area-based service delivery, Wilfred Solomons-Johannes, met with stakeholders on 18 January to discuss the way forward for the construction of the bridge, with another meeting to be held relating to the level of priority the project will be afforded.

“We have the priority list of capital projects gathered. It took us nearly a year because of the backlog. In February we are going to start prioritising this priority list. After that, the funding requirements after the second round of the priority list will then be discussed by our director, Peter Flowers,” says city official Abdullah Parker.

Solomons-Johannes points out that the feasibility assessment on the area has already been carried out.

“This particular project is estimated to cost R2m. We are going to ask them to prioritise that so we can secure the R2m we need for this project. We met with Conrad Fraser who was at the meeting. We are just waiting for them to do the prioritisation so that they can align it to the budget capitalisation process, which is kicking in now for the remainder of the year and into the next financial year. We will await feedback at the next subcouncil meeting,” he says.

Rashied Adams, ward 49 councillor, says he is at his wits’ end at what to do in order to have the project carried out.

“I don’t think any more questions can be asked regarding this, because I think we have exhausted all of our energies into this project. All I need is to be told exactly whether the project can proceed and if so, when.

“The previous ward councillor of this area also tried tackling this issue and all we got were referrals. So I will patiently await the response from the outcomes of that meeting that will be set. I trust that our director will come back with a good answer.”
