A group of Muizenberg women have been raising funds for a safer community for a decade.

Safer Together is a group of volunteers from Muizenberg who arrange a wide range of fun events to give members of the greater Muizenberg community an opportunity to get to know one another and raise funds for various safety-related initiatives.

Safer Together was started 10 years ago when the local police station’s victim support room needed some equipment and furniture, explains the organisation’s chairperson, Melanie Burke. “We did the fundraising for it and when the job was done, the women realised that they had really enjoyed doing it and wanted to keep doing more. That is how Safer Together started,” she explains.

Burke is joined by other local women: Truida Prekel, Glendyr Dade, Pat Hallett, Bronwyn Redding-Jones, Melanie Loubser, Liz Linsell and Sindiwe Magona.

“Our most visible activity is the monthly Muizenberg Moonlight Meander, a walk on the beach to encourage locals to use and enjoy our public spaces together with other members of our community. Over the last 10 years we have facilitated the collaboration of many local projects and continue to support some of these financially, such as the weekly clinic that is run by a social worker for homeless people in Muizenberg.

The organisation works with local partners, such as the Muizenberg Improvement District, the local neighbourhood watch groups, police, the community policing forum and other non-profit organisations – especially those working towards community safety, women empowerment and youth development. “We work to seek creative and appropriate solutions to relevant community challenges.”

The next Moonlight Meander is on Saturday 27 January, she adds.

“It is a blue moon this month so we invite as many people as possible to join us and make donations that will be going towards Volunteer Wildfire Services.”
