The old FNB building in Mowbray is becoming a problem for the locals.

Authorities say their attempts to bring the new owner to the table to discuss plans to secure the building have fallen on deaf ears.

The front part, including the entrance, has been broken into. The parking area is filthy and littered with broken tree branches, and there is garbage lying all around.

Resident Marlene Gildenhuys says the building is a threat to the locals. There have been complaints from a nearby pre-primary school as well.

“The concern is that the owner has not had the courtesy to communicate upon enquiry. There is an elderly couple directly behind the building who are feeling unsafe. Goodwill and communication is important in a community,” Gildenhuys adds.

General Manager of the Groote Schuur Community Improvement District (GSCID), Nina Farrel, says: “We have had complaints about the current state of the building, now home to ‘homeless clients’. We have notified the owner about the state of the building.”

Local councillor, Paddy Chapple, confirms: “The building was sold by FNB. It is being stripped of all valuable material. There have been several joint interventions by City Law Enforcement, police and GSCID which included night-time raids. I must commend GSCID for their constant monitoring.

“GSCID have been in contact with the new owner and have alerted him to the situation. At present no plans for the site have been submitted to me.”

The owner had not responded by the time of going to press.
