Burglars ‘clean out’ centre

The Ocean View Care Centre has suffered three burglaries in a week.

Thieves “cleaned out everything from [the] main container” on Thursday 20 October, says Care Centre founder Johann Kikillus. “They have since damaged more locks and doors and stolen some stuff that we replaced. I have been told that several other churches have been broken into in Ocean View.”

Ocean View police station commander Lieutenant-Colonel Errol Merkeur confirmed two break-ins were reported to the police. “No other break-ins were reported. More regular patrols will be deployed and the neighbourhood watch will be available and visible [to prevent further crime].”

However, the break-ins have put strain on the centre, Kikillus says. “Every year we assist hundreds of families and we run a free Grade R school on almost no budget.”

He is now appealing for donations of or assistance to repair the fence as well as install an alarm system.

“Most of these criminals are also drug addicts and steal to feed their habit. Ocean View Care Centre is happy to assist them with counselling and group work. Even the guys who stole from us,” he says.
