Learners of Levana Primary School in Lavender Hill received a health check-up at school when they were visited by a wellness bus.

The wellness bus is an initiative of the provincial health department to provide primary healthcare services where residents’ access to healthcare is a challenge.

The mobile bus provides services in oral health, clinical assessments and optometry. The services are done on site at the school that is visited and is open to schools in the surrounding area.

School nurse sister Cheryl Adams says the bus helps a lot, especially in areas where it is difficult for learners to get to health facilities.

“We discovered that a lot of children had a lot of dental problems, and skin problems as well. So when we go there we have ointments to help them. The children really love the bus and it really makes it easy for us to check them. The children also had their eyes tested and those with eye problems will be getting their specs after six weeks,” she says.

The bus was at the school for a week.

Adams says the parents also love the bus and its services were used by children from surrounding areas.

“We have other small children coming to the school as well for the check-up. It’s really a challenge in the community; at least the bus takes the burden off the parent’s shoulders.”

Patricia Bailey, a teacher and co-chairperson of the health-promoting schools programme, says: “The principal, learners and teachers feel honoured to have the bus at the school. It really helps our learners.

“We know we won’t have the bus again in a long time but we really appreciate that we had a chance to have it. This is important for our learners and it’s important for us as well as teachers. Knowing that our learners are healthy makes teaching a lot easier,” she says.

Levana Primary is one of the health-promoting school and has health awareness campaigns.
