Call for ward participation

2018-05-08 06:01

Councillor Aslam Cassiem calls on ward 46 residents to take part in annual ward committees to enhance the community’s conditions. He claims not enough organisations within Gatesville, Surrey Estate, and Manenberg, amongst others, have come forward.

“Ward committees are established to enhance public participation in decision making . The objective is to include the community in local government, advise the councillor; and represent faith-based organisations, safety groups and more,” he explains.

“It will also serve to make recommendations to or through myself to relevant local government structures. The ward committee is a specialised participatory structure that assists Council in identifying challenges and residents’ needs.

He says the committee also stands to receive queries and complaints from residents concerning municipal services and to provide feedback to the community.

Interested groups currently forming part of ward 46 are neighbourhood watch members representing the safety sector which include Fouzia Veerasamy from Gatesville NHW, Thaabit Barendse from Surrey Estate NHW and Naweed Mohamed from Rylands NHW.

Civic-based organisation representatives include Estelle Benjamin from Greenhaven Residents’ Association, Gasnullah Isaacs from Newfields Residents’ Association and Pastor Isaacs De Yong and Haroon Castens from Manenberg Residents’ Association.

“It is important for these committees to interact with other forums and organisations on matters affecting the ward to purse diverse interests. We are still trying to get on board members from Rylands Residents’ Association. The legislative cut-off date was months ago, but we are still requesting groups to come forward,” adds Cassiem.
