Callous bakkie driver drove away

2017-12-05 06:00

At about 12:25 on Saturday 25 November, I was walking to my car along the pavement in the direction of Kenilworth when I heard an impact noise.

I looked back and saw a car guard had been hit by a white Toyota or Nissan bakkie with a white canopy. The man was lying in the centre of the two lanes going towards Claremont.

Three other people walking towards me also saw what had happened.

The bakkie stopped for a few seconds a few metres away from the victim and then very slowly drove away towards Claremont.

I also saw a piece of black plastic, which could have been a piece of the bakkie’s bumper which had fallen off the vehicle, lying near the victim.

I immediately called 10111 and the police arrived about 20 minutes later.

I gave all my contact numbers to 10111 and also to the police when they arrived, offering to let them know what I saw.

For about 20 minutes or longer, many onlookers stood and stared at the victim while he was motionless in the busy road. I am disabled and could not offer any help, but it was quite disconcerting while many onlookers just stood and stared.

I hope the police catch this heartless and criminal bakkie driver. No matter who or what the victim was, this is a human being you hit and then cowardly drove away from.
